In June 2022, the costume department of the movie Ferrari, directed by Michael Mann, sent us a request to produce 23 helmets for the drivers. Each helmet was crafted under the guidance of the costume designer, with many details carefully considered, such as the original colors of the helmets, buckle colors, and logos of brands.
For example, Jean Behra's helmet had the Maserati logo hand-painted, referencing the original version. Piero Taruffi's helmet was based on information his daughter Prisca Taruffi provided, referencing her father's original helmet used in the 1957 Mille Miglia.
This helmet had very special details, such as metal hooks to hold the strap of the goggles and buttons on the visor for a removable top visor, which Piero used to avoid direct lights that could interfere with his vision.
Eugenio Castellotti's helmet was also fitted with original details, such as a black stripe on the lower part of the helmet and two metal hooks to secure the goggle strap and prevent it from coming loose, just to name a few.
Working alongside the talented costume department, we meticulously recreated helmets with period-correct details. Every piece was crafted with utmost precision, from the matte finish designed to reduce on-screen glare to the aging techniques applied by the costume team in Modena, making sure the helmets looked like they had truly lived through the racing history depicted in the film.
We were incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate on such a prestigious project as Ferrari and to help bring the legendary Michael Mann's vision to life. Being entrusted with the creation of 23 custom helmets and 12 pairs of driving boots for this film was not only a testament to our craftsmanship but also a unique privilege to contribute to the authenticity of a production that brings to life the world of motorsport history.
Here's Argentina race car driver Juan Manuel Fangio's character, wearing our helmet replica in the movie.
This project was a rare and exciting opportunity for us to combine our expertise with the vision of a world-class film team, creating timeless pieces that will now be immortalized on the big screen. We take great pride in having played a role in helping this film achieve the highest level of authenticity and detail, bringing history to life for audiences around the world.
The drivers featured in the movie are ranked among the greats of F1, and here, we showcase what we achieved with their helmets for the film.
